This problem is based on the concept of oxidation of an aromatic compound.

Aromatic hydrocarbons are the compounds having benzene ring in their chemical structure. Benzene ring is an aromatic ring which has a pi electron of six electrons that enhances its electron density.

Aromatic compounds can be oxidized by using many oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate (KMnO4)
which is basically used for the oxidation of alkyl substituted aromatic compounds in order to form a carboxylic acid.

Since for oxidation reactions , Rate of Reaction :primary carbon > secondary carbon > tertiary carbon therefore -CH3 group at the bottom will be replaced by -COOH group since it is less hindered and rest structure will remain same
