2. If all the magnesium did not completely react with oxygen, the yield of magnesium oxide would be lower than the expected yield.

2 Mg + O2 \rightarrow 2 MgO

Suppose we started with 12 g Mg and we are supposed to obtain 30 g MgO from the combustion of 12 g Mg. But if only 8 g Mg react with oxygen, then we certainly will not obtain 30 g MgO.

3. If water is not removed completely in the final heating step then we will obtain an inaccurate mass of MgO which will be higher than the expected mass of MgO. This is because in this case we will be measuring the mass of MgO along with the mass of the residual water.  

4.  Mg - period 3, group 2A.

Number of Valence shell electrons = Group number.

Hence Mg has 2 electrons in the valence shell. Hence valency of Mg = +2.

N - period 2, group 5A.

Hence N has 5 electrons in the valence shell. Hence valency of N = - 3.

So the formula of compound formed by the reaction between Mg and N is Mg3N2.

Water is added to convert Mg3N2 to MgO hence to remove the contaminant Mg3N2 and produce a pure MgO product. If water had not been added, the MgO obtained would not be pure and the mass of MgO obtained would be higher than the expected mass due to the presence of Mg3N2.
