Tips and Strategies for Successful Tutoring To avaid confusion and misunderstanding we have outlined below the dient (tutee responsibilities as well as the Tutor's Code Please contact bAnn Brewer (brewer@niddlebury.edu) if you have any questions or concerns. Client Responsibilities Attend dass, take notes, and do (or attempt to do) assigned work. Remember, your teacher is your primary source of information. Your tutor can help you review and clarify trouble spots but your tutor cannot fill in for your missed classes Do your own work. The tutor is willing to instruct, direct and advise you. However, the tutor will not do your work for you. Attend your tutoring sessions. The tutor cannot help you if you don't show up. Have a positive attitude. Approach each session with the objective of learning as much as possible. You should have questions ready and reading assignments completed. Your tutor is willing to help; you must be willing to try. It is your responsibility to notify your tutor EARLY if you cannot make an appointment. What do students value most in a language tutor, according to dient evaluations? • Friendliness • Patience • Encouragement and confidence-building • Ability to explain challenging rules concepts/ vocabulary in new ways • Long-term, supportive relationship • Availability/ flexibility in scheduling Tutoring Tips Preparing for a session If possible, find out what the student wants to work on BEFORE you meet Exchange contact info in case there is a last-minute cancelation (We pay 15 min for no- shows) Choose a quiet, well-lit area (not dorm rooms, for professional reasons) Bring pen/ pencil, notepad, other resources? (e.g., textbook? Laptop ?) Plan to meet for no more than 1.5 hours each time (1 hr preferred) When you meet for the first time Introduce yourself and confirm the dient's name. Get to know the student a bit (e.g. Why did you choose to study this language? How are you feeling about it?) Discuss their overall goals for working with a tutor Identify specific goals for that particular session Decide together (esp. 100/ 200-level) what language to use during the session During the session Sit next to (rather than across from) your student, so the two of you can work together Learn a bit about how things are going with the dass and the assignment before "jumping o Make sure student work matches the expectations for the assignment!! in." Observe and use nonverbal cues (body language, tone of voice, etc.) Know when to answer student questions regarding social, academic, personal issues, and when to direct the student to another resource. Offer praise and encouragement, but without being phony Acknowledge progress, even if there are still struggles/ errors Never ridicule incorrect answers If things are not going well, don't be afraid to take a break or end early Share your own struggles and strategies, if the student seems frustrated Be OK with not knowing If a student asks a question you cannot answer, follow-up later, or take some time to look up the answer online or in reference books. As we all agree with the fact that we cannot clap from one hand, we should also agree upon the fact that we cannot build a good positive relation single-sided, for a facilitator to be a good peer facilitator students also plays a major role in it. Some role of student are listed below -

ROLE OF STUDENTS

  1. Facilitator-  When it comes to peer learning no one can be a better facilitator for your peer than you, So Don't tease your groupmate for not knowing anything but help him in the best way you can.
  2. Listener-  Listen to you peer carefully, try not to cut someone's statement in between be patient to let them complete and speak when it's your turn. By doing this everyone will get proper space and time to share their point of views, and you will be getting time to analyse your thoughts because only a good LISTENER can be a good SPEAKER.
  3. Note keeper/ Recorder- Record the thoughts and things being discussed in the group and then write the summary after the discussion is over.
  4. Speaker- Share your views, experiences and knowledge with your group and with other groups. This will enhance your knowledge and understanding.
  5. Motivator- Noone understand your group mates better than you, so motivate them to participate in the group activities and discussion.
  6. Respondent-  Share your feedback, ideas and Views with your peer facilitator to make peer learning more efficient and interesting for your groups.

DON'T for Students-

  1. Never try to demine or tease any of your peers
  2. Never try to emphasise your viewpoint over others.
  3. Don't try to stand out or above the group but try to get involved in it.     

These are the few roles a student can play to make peer learning better and efficient for himself and his groupmates.

Typical Peer Session

In a typical peer session, students are grouped in a pair or into a group of 6. They are made to sit together in a way that they can easily talk and share their work for example in a circle. In this session, students can share their problems, experience, knowledge and can help each other to solve their problem. A facilitator will be guiding them to see different methods to enhance their work and to work upon their mistakes rather than just merely telling them their mistakes or providing them with a correct solution. When a person is speaking than everyone will act as a facilitator and listen to that person carefully, every person will be given equal importance and attention.
