The history of newspapers in South Africa dates back to 1800, when the governor of the Cape Colony introduced the publishing of the government-controlled Cape Town Gazette and African Advertiser. The Herald, first printed in 1845, is the oldest newspaper in South Africa. It is based in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape province, as the main local daily newspaper which serves the Nelson Mandela Bay metro area. An estimated 1.3 million newspapers are sold in South Africa daily.

Newspapers have conventionally been an important part of civil society, providing information to citizens, convening groups around events and issues, and serving as a watchdog against abuses by those in power. Through newspapers people have a greater value for all, especially in a social equality. It keeps the society informed and increases the people's general knowledge. Newspapers tell the society what is happening around them for they are the world's mirrors
