ARIPO was founded in 1976 in Lusaka, Zambia, with the UNECA and the WIPO collaborating. A group of 15 founding countries came together to reach an agreement. In 1978, the ARIPO Agreement went into effect. ARIPO was originally only available to English-speaking African nations.
