SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM

• Symbolic interactionism is a major frame work of sociology which explains, the social behaviour of individuals in terms of how they interact each other through symbols.
• It is favorable for understanding, how society is created through repeated interactions between individuals.
• The interaction between individuals are influenced by shared understanding and interpretations of meaning.
• Symbolic interactionism was originated from a sociological perspective which developed in the mid 20th century and that plays a major influence in several areas of decipline.
• It is significant in fields of sociology and social psycology
• This social psycological theory was developed by Charles Horton Cooley and George Herbert Mead during the early 20th century.

BASIC PRINCIPLES

• Human being are capable of thinking when compared to animals.
• The capacity of thinking is developed from social interaction.
• Social interaction is favorable for people, to learn the meanings and symbols and which help them to practice their unique capacity for thought.
• Meanings and symbols are help full for human action and interaction.
• On the basis of interpretation of situation, people are able to modify the meanings and symbols ,that they acquired through interaction.
• These modifications and alterations are developed by people through their ability to interpret the possible course of action and examine the advantages and disadvantages and finally they select one.
• The modified pattern of action and interaction are the key elements in creating groups and society

SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONIST PERSPECTIVE ON GENDER INEQUALITY

• Gender and gender roles are learned through socialization process.
• Women are socialized in to expressive roles ,women occupied roles are traditionally socialized (nurturing and emotionally supportive roles) where men are socialized in to instrumental roles[task oriented roles]
• According to the symbolic interactionist approch, health and illness are social construction this emphasizes that various physical and emotional conditions have no objective reality but instead are considered health or illness only if they are defined by a society or its members.

       In my view point,symbolic interactionism analyses the society by focusing on the subjective meanings of people on objects,events and behaviours.society is thought to be socially constructed through human interpretations.People interprets others behaviour and these interpretations pave the way for social bonds.

CRITICISM OF SYMBOLIC INTERACTIONISM

• Symbolic intractionist are criticized because they are impressionistic in their research methods and unsystematic in their theories.
• It is argued that the theory is not a single one, but it is a frame work for many more theories. In addition to this, some theorists address that symbolic interaction theory lack its testability.
• Most of the critisism on symbolic interactionism was arose during 1970 s in united states when quantitative approaches to sociology was predominant.
