1. As memory and the hard disk is adding to the productivity of the computer (asset), it will be added to the cost of a computer otherwise debit to repairs and maintenance accounts. Here we are assuming this expense as capital expenditure.
| Date | Particulars | Debit($) | Credit($) |
| Computer a/c | 420 | ||
| To cash/bank a/c | 420 | ||
| (being memory and hard drive upgrade in the computer) |
2. Additional depreciation =$10
At the end of 4 years, the salvage value of the computer will be nil.
And thus salvage value for memory and hard disk upgrade will also be nil.
The cost of up-gradation of the computer is $420 and the remaining life is 3.5 years.
Thus depreciation for upgradation will be = (Cost-salvage value)/life =$420/3.5 =$120
Monthly depreciation =$120/12 =$10
Thus there will be addition of $10 in monthly depreciation.
