Emergency medical responder is the level of EMS practicioner who is likely to be the first person on the scene with emergency care training.

Emergency medical technician is the level of EMS practicioner who provides basic emergency medical care and transportation to the patient who access the EMS system including oxygen therapy and ventillation equipment,pulse oximetry,use of automatic blood pressure monitoring equipment and limited medication administration.

Advanced Emergency medical technician is the level of EMS practicioner who performs the responsibilities of an EMT with the addition of the use of advanced airway devices,monitoring of blood glucose levels,initiation of intravenous and intraosseous infusions and administration of a select number of medications.

The role of the paramedic in the emergency department varies greatly between states.In some states a paramedic can be comparable to a nurse in other they are purely assistants.They are trained to perform what is commonly referred to as advanced life support care such as administer a large list of medications,interpret ecg,monitor cardiac rythms and perform cardiac defibrillation.
