There was close relationship between state and church in the middle age in England about 1150. In that period, the church had the power to control the state. The church was under the control of the Roman catholic church. So, the power of the state would be directly and indirectly controlled by the church. The archbishop would me more powerful than the king. therefore there would be frequent conflict between the king and the archbishop.

In that period church was so powerful that the church authority could change king and select new king. The church would even collect tax and the state had to offer tax to the church. In the activities of the state the church had great influence. People were more dependent on church rather than the state. To take any decision, the king had to take the permission of the church. Even the law would be introduced by church.
