Sonographically identifiable pathology in 1st trimester:

Early ultrasound scan can detect major chromosomal abnormalities such as Down's syndrome as early as 10 -12 weeks of gestation.

Sonographical observations:

In the ultrasound scan , there is darkened line around the neck which is due to thickened skin around the areas of neck which is observed between 10 and 14 weeks.

After birth prognosis :

Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by an extra chromosome in 21st pair of chromosome. This extra chromosome results in physical and developmental changes. Usually seen 1 in every 700 babies.

The average lifespan of baby with Down's syndrome is 60 years. Earlier, the lifespan was 25 years . The increased lifespan is because of training and institutionalizing people with Down's syndrome.
