According to ValenceBond Theory, a bond is formed by the overlapping of two atomic orbitals having minimum energy and an unpaired electron each. Only valence shell orbitals are involved inbond formation according VBT.
According to Molecular Orbital Theory, combination of atomic orbitals having minimum energy result in the formation of molecular orbitals which explain the bonding.
Differences between these two theories are,
i) VBT can explain ionic character in a bond whereas MOT does not.
ii) MOT can predict magnetic properties , bond order of a bond whereas VBT can not exactly.
Explain what Valence Bond theory does and explain what Molecular Orbital theory does. Then, tell the...
Molecular orbital theory? I've looked at tons of videos on molecular orbital theory and I'm still so confused. Is there anyway you can dumb down and summarize an explanation of MO theory and what to do? I'm in orgo 1 and have a test tomorrow and really need to know what I should understand about MO and valence bond theory without confusing myself again. Thanks in advance!!!

Topular 2. Draw the spatial structure for CFs. Use valence bond theory and an orbital diagram to explain how the hybrid orbitals are formed (6 pts).
13. (14 pts) MO Theory Draw the complete (core and valence) molecular orbital energy level diagram for the homonuclear diatomic molecule Be2. Use standard MO symbols to label the energy levels (That is: o, o, , or n*, as needed, with subscripts indicating which atomic orbitals formed them.) a. Sketch the molecular orbital formed when two 2p orbitals, one each on each Be atom, overlap to form a o antibonding MO b. Using your MO energy level diagram in (a),...

The molecular orbital energy diagram for the valence orbitals of
the NO– ion is shown below. Use this diagram to answer the
following questions.
a) What is the bond order in NO– ? b) Is NO– diamagnetic, or is
it paramagnetic? How can you tell? c) Which has the larger bond
distance, NO– or NO?
