While exploring opportunities to improve processes of care for a group practice, you find no variability in compliance with the US Preventive Services Task Force’s recommendations for colorectal cancer screening across the practice’s physician over time. Is this absence of variation optimal? Why or why not?

Answer:

As, here we are exploring opportunities to improve processes of care for a group practice, as we find no variation for colorectal cancer screening, in compliance with the US Preventive Services Task Force’s recommendations, across the practice’s physician over time, here, for this quality improvement project and quality control initiatives, no variation or absence of variation can’t be considered as Optimal, as we want to determine the value for a process, data reliability, but not just determination of variation, as in medical practice, our job is not just to eliminate the variation, also we must understand how is the quality of variation, sources of variation, the data used for measuring the variation, whether is reliable and accurate, again, Variation can be defined as a difference between the observed event and a standard, thus measuring the variation, also needs best practice or standard or here recommendations as established by US Preventive Services Task Force, thus the role of best practice also takes important role for measuring the correct variation, as without knowing the best practice, even if we don’t get no variation, still the information can’t be considered as reliable and optimal, again, our objective to improve system performance with knowing even good variation or sub-optimal variation or common causes can be responsible for variation, thus we need to ensure also whether the standard practices are best for measuring the current performance. In organizational context, good variation can be useful to improve system performance more broadly and again if any sub optimal variation is observed, that can be reduced or eliminated with knowing the root causes for such variation, and with implementation of correct and effective strategic response, so variation data to be checked again and again to establish reliable variation result and helps us to know where to focus and how far, we are from standard practices, here, standard recommendations as made by US Preventive Services Task Force,
