hi, I'm new to web development but a friend wants me to update her website. She have me the protocol name, the username, and the password.

how would I use these elements to access the site so I can start redesigning?

So either she has given you the ssh credentials or the credentials of hosting provider. In the first case you cann access the instance by typing in command prompt/terminal

ssh username@host

password

then you would be able to access the insrance and then start editing the website.

IN case the website is hosted on some hosting provider then you need to access that provider's website and then login and open c-panel and you would be able to access and edit that website.
