cationic polymerization is based on capability of carbocations and other positively charged ions of adding rapidly at double bonds and reacting with heteroatoms of other organic molecules.

Vinyl ethers have a strongly electron donating alkoxy group readily form polymers on treatment with an acidic compound. polymerization in presence of an acid is cationic.
