Zn2+(aq) + I2(aq) ------> ZnI2(aq) + I2 -------> [ZnI4]2- . The formation of the ZnI2 from Zn and I2 solution indicates a change in colour of I2 from violet to brown after about 20 mins. After 10 mins, there is no further change in the colour of the brown solution. The limiting reagent is I2, which acts as an oxidising agent and Zn is in excess, which is the reducing agent.Whatever I2 is available, it is completely reduced from iodine to iodide by Zn, so Zn is in excess.
