Controlling is the managerial function that helps to ensure desired performance by evaluating the performance and by comparing it with the standards set. Controlling helps to find any deviations in the process and take corrective and preventive actions to avoid mistakes. Hence controlling is very important to achieve the organizational goals. It is also important to ensure performance accuracy and efficiency by eliminating deviations. It brings discipline within the organization and also is important in coordinating the activities and employees within an organization.
The three steps in a controlling process include establishing the standards, measuring the actual performance and comparing the same with the established standards and taking corrective actions in case of deviations. For example, in my previous team, our management implemented the control process when the customer complained about delay in our service. We were providing support for an application used by the customer. The management established standards regarding the time we can take to respond and solve the customer issues. They evaluated the performance daily and compared it with the standards to find any deviations. Our manager followed up the issues where deviations were found and took the necessary steps to close them with priority. This kind of controlling helped us to achieve our monthly performance goals and also helped to improve customer satisfaction.
