Explain how a layer 2 switch learns the addresses of devices that are connected to its ports and how it forwards data. Your explanation should begin when the switch is first introduced into a network and conclude when it has received data from many devices.
Write no more than 250 words.
The communication in a network segment is achieved with the help of the MAC address of the device connected to the network. A switch is an intermediate networking device used to connected various host devices in the network. The switch maintain a MAC address table in which details of all the MAC address of the devices connected to the corresponding switch ports are stored.
When a frame is received by the switch from a port then it will first search it its MAC table for the corresponding MAC address of the host and the port number. If the details is found then the frame is send to the particular port. If the entry is not found in the table then the switch send the flood packet to all the active ports other than the port from which the packet was received. The host with the corresponding address will then accept the frame and the corresponding entry is updated in the MAC table of the switch.
Thus the switches keeps on updating the information in the MAC table based on the new information available about the host. SO switches will have all the MAC addresses of all the host connected to a particular switch port.

What is the size of an ARP packet when the protocol is IPv4 and hardware is Ethernet? Ans: Is the size of ARP packet fixed? Explain. Ans: Assume we have an isolated link (not connected to any other link) such as a private network in a company. Do we still need addresses in both network layer and data link layer? Explain. Ans: In a block code, a dataword is 20 bits, the corresponding codeword is 25 bits. What are the...
For this assignment you will explore subnet addresses, host addresses and direct broadcast addresses. You will be provided an IP addresses and then asked to answer questions related to the IP. In this assignment, first we explain how to find the subnet address for each subnet, the range of host addresses, and the direct broadcast address. Then you will be asked to do a similar exercise by yourself. Assume that you have been assigned the 192.168.1.0/24 network. You need to...

166 Chapter 8: TCP/IP Applications Getting Down to Business The way network communication all those ls and Os) goes in and out of a machine physically is through the NIC (network interface card). The way network communication goes in and out of a machine logically though, is through a program or service. A service is a program that runs in the background, independent of a logon, that provides functionalities to a system. Windows client machines, for instance, have a Workstation...

As such, a DMZ is a suitable solution to segregate such services from internal networkis). The network diagram provided (Figure 1) illustrates the IT environment of a medium organisation, which...
A psychologist examined the number of electronic devices used for communication (computers, tablets, and smartphones) in the home and reported a mean (μ) of 3.2 devices and standard deviation (σ) of 1.8 devices. But I wonder if my circle of friends has a different mean of devices in the home. To test this idea, I randomly picked 16 friends of mine and asked them how many electronic communication devices they have in their home. I would like to perform a...
Project 4-3: In the following steps, you will learn more about the PING (Packet Internet Grouper) utility, which can be used on a network running IPv4 to verify that TCP/IP is configured correctly and communicating with the network. A ping test is typically the first thing network professionals try when troubleshooting a TCP/IP connection problem. For this project, you can use any type of workstation that's running TCP/IPv4, preferably one connected to the Internet. The output described in the following...
