  1. The maximum energy conversion efficiency of a nuclear power plant depends on the temperature of the water used for cooling. What is the difference in maximum efficiency between two identical plants, where one has cooling water available at 8oC and the second has cooling water available at 20oC? The temperature of the steam in each case is 295oC.

A nuclear power plant generates 3000 MW of heat energy from nuclear reactions in the reactor's core. This energy is used to boil water and produce high-pressure steam at 320 ∘C. The steam spins a turbine, which produces 1000 MW of electric power, then the steam is condensed and the water is cooled to 25∘C before starting the cycle again. Part A: What is the maximum possible thermal efficiency of the power plant? Part B: Cooling water from a river...

A power plant taps steam superheated by geothermal energy to 421 K (the temperature of the hot reservoir) and uses the steam to do work in turning the turbine of an electric generator. The steam is then converted back into water in a condenser at 321 K (the temperature of the cold reservoir), after which the water is pumped back down into the earth where it is heated again. The output power (work per unit time) of the plant is...
