Low loss gears can contribute substantially to load dependent power loss reduction in the gear mesh. Low friction oils are available for further reduction of gear and bearing mesh losses.
A transmission is a machine in a power transmission system, which provides controlled application of the power. Often the term transmission refers simply to the gearbox that uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device..
Advantages include low weight, compact design, no backlash, high gear ratios, high torques, and coaxial input and output. Disadvantages may include lower torsional stiffness and greater mechanical wear as a result of the preload caused by the flexspline.
