I am having a difficult time trying to understand which approach to family therapy would be best in a situation of an adolescent, who is not abusing substances or been arrested etc. It is a divorced family with a parent with substance abuse and added a live-in partner right after the divorce. This child is having difficulty in school and there has been suspicion of sexual abuse.
the three that I am considering, or integration of each, is Functional Family, Multisystemic, and Multidimensional. I find positive in each but can not find the best one that also includes culture?
I am torn between these and not sure if there is one best
Thanks
In my opinion, Functional Family therapy which was started in 1970s seems more suitable as it incorporates personal, family and cultural aspects in the therapy by targeting, abusive, violent and delinquent behaviors. It is a holistic approach which tries to bring in more respect irrespective of the socio-economic and cultural barriers thus adopting a holistic approach to treat families. Focuses on the strengths of the individuals in order to prevent crimes and prevent victimization. It works through five important stages such as engagement, motivation, relational assessment, behavioral change and generalization.
