Software development, as we all know, is a dynamic process. The life cycle of a software is not fixed and keeps on changing as new inevitable changes appear. The requirements keep on changing due to several factors. The changes arise from business, technical or end user end. There may be many reasons for the change such as error is previous requirements, changing customer needs, change in technical requirements or in the business model. So, requirement volatility is very common project development risk. It has many severe risks if not handled correctly. It affects software releases and has deep impact on project schedule, cost and performance. The more the requirement volatility the more negative effect on the project schedule and overall cost. When the requirements change in a later stage of the project life the cost required is even higher. The schedule may be completely thrown out of deadline because of this. Th major areas which are affected because of this are:

  1. Project Schedule: The project schedule is the base before starting any project. We develop the schedule based on the different phases in the project and the individual tasks involved in them. Everything in a project from coding to testing to meeting the end user and testing goes according to this. When requirement volatility occurs it affects code, testing and documentation. This can result into missed deadlines. And missing one meaning pushing all others ahead too.
  2. Project performance: With changing requirements the performance is affected too. The change of requirements from the initial ones set the developers back days, even months. The performance is affected badly. Early stages of software development see more requirement changes. And the changes decrease with time.
  3. Project Cost: Change in requirements means changing the effort you put in the project. Sometimes new requirements means changing the terms of agreement and making new figure according to the new requirements.
