In GMP synthesis the energy source being ATP makes sense since the cell is presumably making GMP because it needs guanine nucleotides. If the cell is low on guanine nucleotides, GTP would be in short supply. Similarly, when the cell is making AMP that means the cell needs adenine nucleotides thus ATP is also in short supply so GMP is used as a cofactor in this case.
