Project management question

So the word has come down about an all hands meeting at 1:00 PM in the main conference room.   Rumors are flying and they all say the same thing.  They are going to pull the plug on this "Death March" of a project.  Most of us are both happy to hear it and curious about what finally motivated management to shut it down.  Here is a pretty good list of the indicators that say "We should give up on this and move on."

No wait, I think I will delegate this list to...YOU!  Soooo, what do you think people!  We know we should termination the project before completion when --- what people ???

Key reasons why a project is terminated before the completion date are as follows:

  • Premature abandonment of the project because of technical reasons that restrict the achievement of core goals.
  • The project loses its relevance because the project is competing in a field where there are too many organizations and the project is no longer financially attractive and viable.
  • The project head and coordinator quit the project and the project has to be terminate as finding a replacement would be time-consuming and counterproductive.
  • Loss of funding, resources, and manpower to successfully complete the project
  • A mid-project review suggests that the project will not achieve the desired goals.
  • The new regulatory and legal compliances make the project non-viable
  • The project expense has gone over the top making the project unattractive.
  • The cost of the project exceeds the benefits that the project completion will deliver.
  • The technology has evolved and is beyond the scope of the project.
  • The project has missed its deadlines over and over again losing its relevance.

To conclude many projects are terminating before time because of rapid changes in technology and much new disruptive technologies making the project unviable. The projects though well managed and properly executed lose their relevance because the original assumptions have changed especially in software projects.
