Question

A nurse is preparing to administer 0.9% sodium chloride (0.9% NaCl) 1.5 L IV to infuse over 6 hr

A nurse is preparing to administer 0.9% sodium chloride (0.9% NaCl) 1.5 L IV to infuse over 6 hr. The drop factor of the manual IV tubing is 20 gtt/mL. The nurse should set the manual IV infusion to deliver how many gtt/min? (Round the answer to the nearest whole number. Use a leading zero if it applies. Do not use a trailing zero.)

A nurse is preparing to administer famotidine 20 mg by intermittent IV bolus over 15 min. Available is famotidine 20 mg in 100 ml dextrose 5% (D,W). The nurse should set the IV pump to deliver how many m/hr (Round the answer to the nearest whole number. Use a leading zero if it applies. Do not use a trailing zero.)

ANSWER.

* Calculation of gtt/min.

       Formula

          gtt/min = Volume(ml) / Time(min) * Drop factor(gtt/ml).

   Here

      Volume(ml) = 1500 ml

      Time(min) = 360 min (6hr)

       Drop factor = 20 gtt/ml.

As per above formula

        gtt/min = 1500 / 360 * 20

                     = 4.16 * 20

                     = 83.2

                     = 83 gtt/min.

* Calculation of ml/hr.

         ml/hr = Volume(ml) /Time(hr).

    Calculation of volume

         Volume(ml) = Desired dose/Dose in hand * Quantity.

     Here

          Desired dose (D) = 20 mg.

          Dose in hand (H) = 20 mg.

               Quantity(Q) = 100 ml.

As per above formula

          Volume(ml) = D/H * Q

                             = 20/20 * 100

                             = 1 * 100

                             = 100 ml

         Time(hr) = 0.25 hr (15 min)

              ml/hr = 100 / 0.25

                       = 400 ml/hr.
