Question

A loudspeaker of mass 25.0 kg is suspended a distance of h = 1.20 m below the ceiling by two cables

A loudspeaker of mass 25.0 kg is suspended a distance of h = 1.20 m below the ceiling by two cables that make equal angles with the ceiling. Each cable has a length of l = 2.50 m. (Figure 1)

Part A

What is the tension T in each of the cables?

Use 9.80 m/s^2 for the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity.

Answer #1

since the cables are handling the masses

2T cos a = mg

T = mg/2cos a

T = 25*9.8 / (2*1.2/2.5)

T = 255.2 N

tension acting in the cable is 255.2 N
