A third point charge q3 = 3.4 μC is now positioned along the y-axis at a distance d = 7.2 cm from q1 as shown. What is Ex(P), the x-component of the field produced by all 3 charges at point P?

Two point charges (q1 = -3.5μC and q2 = 8.7 μC) are fixed along the x-axis, separated by a distance d = 7.2 cm. Point P is located at (x,y) = (d,d).

Answer #1

For X component of all electric feild on point P

Ex = Ex1 + Ex2 + Ex3

Ex = - k q1 /(\sqrt{2}d)2 * cos45 + 0 + k q3 /d2

( due to point charge q2 electrick feild will be in only y direction so Ex2 = 0)

Ex = - 9*109 * 3.5 *10-6 /(\sqrt{2} *0.0342) cos45 + 9*109 * 3.4 *10-6 /(0.0342)

Ex = (-13.62 + 26.47 ) *106

Ex = 12.85 *106 N/C
