Answer #1

The Two Party System is the system found in American politics; it denotes the two major parties (Republican and Democrat) that typically go head-to-head in elections. However, there are additional parties in American politics (such as Independent, Tea Party, Green Party, etc.) that have popular support, but typically do not garner enough votes to win the Presidency.

The Two Party System is most commonly used in reference to the American system of voting for public representatives. The race between two major parties, the Democrats and the Republicans, gives this system its name. It is classified as its own system because of the unique dynamics that surround a political race with only two major parties on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

In order to win a race, the candidate must appeal to the most amount of moderate voters, or those in the middle of the spectrum. This is because the far left and far right will stick to their party lines almost unwaveringly, whereas the moderate voters are more likely to be swayed.

Third-party political parties, such as the Conservative or Tea Parties, still play an important role in a Two Party System, however. This is because these parties outside of the two major parties will still attract votes from voters whose beliefs are near their platform on the political spectrum. For example, the Republican party may attempt to downplay or lessen the popularity of the Conservative party candidate in a race, even though their ideologies may be similar. The effect of the Conservative candidate losing votes is the Republican candidate gaining votes, because he will be closer to the Republican position on the political spectrum - they would definitely not migrate across the spectrum all the way to the Democrats.

An example of this phenomenon could occur like this: a race is underway for a representative position. The Democrat and Republican candidates are split evenly at 50% of the vote for either candidate. However, a Labor party candidate enters the race, and is known for his far-left leanings. Because of this, these far-left voters are attracted to his ideology, and abandon the Democrat candidate in favor of the Labor candidate. The final vote ends 10% Labor, 40% Democrat, and 50% Republican, with the Republican candidate winning.
