Does the interests of the public outweigh the costs of the taxpayers in fulfilling FOIA requirements? Why or why not?
FOIA Introduction:-
The FOIA stands for Freedom of Information Act and gives common public access to government spending on different programs and services that are offered to the common public. To closely monitor and at times control the expenses which government servants incur on various projects the common public is allowed to scrutinize and raise a flag wherever they find discrepancies.
Since, public money is utilized for bringing most projects to reality, the concept believes that the government must be accountable for the same. The Act as described was implemented in the year 1967 and is often described as the law that keeps the citizens informed about the government. It allows citizens to go through most government records subject to certain restrictions in defense and a few political ones.
Case Specifics:-
In my opinion, the interests of the public in the Freedom of Information Act far outweigh the cost that the government has to bear for providing the details. The public on the other hand get a free hand to report any case of financial mishandling by the government agencies if they feel their money has not been put use too properly.
It gives a sense of ownership to the general public, and increases overall accountability for the government. Wasted funds or funds that are said and not utilized properly can be easily traced on the basis of actual work done and punitive action can be taken against erring officers or public servants accordingly.
It creates a way for public audit which allows easier reliability of the government. This not only translates to accounts but also any other records which the government may have subject to certain private restrictions.
This helps in promoting overall transparency of the government and better relations with the common public. Therefore in this act the interests of the public far outweigh the overall costs incurred.
