Cephalexin

a. Classification- beta-lactam antibiotic

b. per oral is the route of administration

c. side effects-

  • hypersensitivity, nephrotoxicity, gastrointestinal disturbances, eosinophilia

d. special considerations-

  • should use care with those having hypersensitivity to penicillin
  • may develop pseudomembranous colitis
  • use cautiously in pregnancy and lactation
  • may aggregate kidney disease

e. nurse consideration -

  • do not take vaccines while using this medicine
  • taking with antidiarrheals or opioid analgesics may worsen the condition
  • Do not continue or use this medicine unless it is ordered by the physician.

Bactrim

a. classification - combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.

b.route of administration- per oral

c. side effects- nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, headache and rashes

d.special considerations-

  • should not administer in pregnancy because it causes folate deficiency; teratogenic risk. Also results in neonatal hemolysis and methaemoglobinaemia while administering in the term.
  • uremia may develop in patients with renal disease

e.nurse consideration-

  • use cautiously in the elderly, may develop bone marrow toxicity.
  • bactrim with diuretics produces thrombocytopenia

Penicillin

a.classification- Beta-lactam antibiotics

b.route of administration- per oral

c. side effects- oral candidiasis, diarrhoea, intestinal nephritis, anaphylaxis, anaemia

d.special considerations-

  • use cautiously in renal impairment
  • use cautiously in those with asthma due to an anaphylactic reaction.
  • may increase the risk of seizure

e. nurse consideration-

  • use in neonates may cause the gasping syndrome.
  • must check for hypersensitivity
  • can take before or after food
  • monitor liver and kidney functions frequently
