CASE STUDY 10-2
As part of a lipid-screening profile, the following results were obtained for a blood specimen drawn from a 30-year-old woman immediately after she had eaten breakfast:
Triglycerides: 300 mg/dL
Cholesterol: 180 mg/dL
Critical Thinking Questions
1. What other laboratory assays would be of value?
2. Discuss the chances that this patient will develop atherosclerosis.
1. Have to do all other laboratory assays why because means we
have to find the other components levels to prevent or planning for
the treatment purposes.
A typical lipid-profile includes the following tests: •HDL - high
density lipoprotein cholesterols, •LDL- low density lipoprotein
cholesterols, •LDL/HDL ratio test, •Triglycerides levels, •VLDL-
Very low density lipoprotein . A lipid profile test or lipid panel
is performed to measure - total cholesterols levels, HDL
cholesterols, LDL cholesterols, triglyceride levels.
2. Normal triglycerides values in the blood are less than 150mg/dl.
Elevated triglyceride levels are a risk factor for
atherosclerosis(one of the common cause), the narrowing of arteries
with the buildup of fatty substances that may lead to heart attack,
stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Markedly elevated
triglyceride levels can cause fatty liver disease and
pancreatitis.

His father died of ischemic heart disease at age 45, and other members of his family have had lipid-related disorders. Fasting blood is drawn for chemistry and hematology...
