(2) Attractions between molecules would cause the real volume of a gas to be ________(Blank 1) than the calculated ideal gas volume. Explain why.

The attraction between the molecules causes the volume of the gas to be decreased or reduced than the calculated ideal gas volume.

This is because, the intermolecular forces of attraction between the molecules will result in bringing the molecules together. This can result in condensation of the gases. Hence, volume will be reduced.

(4) The shore of the Dead Sea is the lowest point on land, not covered by water. This point is 423 meters below sea level. Using equations 10.3 and 10.4, the temperature required to boil water on the shore of the Dead Sea would be degrees Celsius. Round your answer to 1 decimal place.

(5) Explain why gases experience more ideal behavior as temperature increases and pressure decreases.

For a gas to be ideal, two conditions should be followed.

1. There should be no intermolecular force acting among the molecules of gas.

2. Gas molecules should have negligible volume.

So, for following above two conditions, some arguments are given below:

  • As temperature increases, molecules will move apart. Hence they can have negligible intermolecular force of attraction.
  • As pressure decreases, binding force decreases, means, molecules are free to escape apart. Again having less intermolecular force of attraction.
