Answer #1

Ans) 17) The GEM files are designed to be a tool to link data in long-term clinical studies, develop application-specific mapping, convert and test systems, and analyze data collected during the transition period and beyond for all areas in the healthcare industry.

- They are public domain general purpose reference mappings designed to give all sectors of the healthcare industry a tool to use for coding data. GEMs allow entities that use coded data to: Convert large databases and create data sets to test systems and applications. Link data in long-term clinical studies.

18) ICD-10-CM is a seven-character, alphanumeric code. Each code begins with a letter, and that letter is followed by two numbers. The first three characters of ICD-10-CM are the “category.” The category describes the general type of the injury or disease. The category is followed by a decimal point and the subcategory.

- The GEMs are useful in a number of ways. They are a tool to help you convert ICD-9 based systems or applications to ICD-10 based systems. They can help to create one-to-one backwards mappings (also known as “crosswalks”) from incoming ICD-10 based data to ICD-9 based legacy systems.
