phosphates are used to buffer Coca Cola. If the pka1 of H3PO4 is 2.15 and the pH of Coca cola is 2.95, is the concentration of H3PO4 in the drink higher, lower or about the same as or exactly the same as the concentration of H2PO4 in the drink? can someone show how to solve this?

Answer #1

Using Henderson equation,

pH = pKa + log [salt] / [acid]

or

2.95 = 2.15 + log ([H2PO4] / [H3PO4])

or

([H2PO4] / [H3PO4] = 6.31

or

([H2PO4] = 6.31 *  [H3PO4]

thus

([H2PO4] > [H3PO4]

concentration of H3PO4 in the drink lower as the concentration of H2PO4 in the drink.
