Part (b).

Possibility (i). \psitotal = \phi3s + \phi3d

Possibility (ii). \psitotal = \phi3s - \phi3d

Note: \psi indicates molecular wave function, whereas \phi indicates atomic wave functions.

Part (c).

The possible 'l' values of p-subshell are +1, 0, -1

The possible 'l' values of d-subshell are +2, +1, 0, -1, -2

The combinations of electron occupancy are

(+1, +2): L = +3 (F), S = 0 (2S+1 = 1) or 1 (2S+1 = 3), J = L-S, i.e. 1F3 and 3F2 are possible.

Similarly, for the following 14 combinations, 14*2 = 28 term symbols are possible.

(+1, +1), (+1, 0), (+1, -1), (+1, -2), (0, +2), (0, +1), (0, 0), (0, -1), (0, -2), (-1, +2), (-1, +1), (-1, 0), (-1, -1), (-1, -2)

Therefore, the total term symbols possible = 2 + 28 = 30
