A 40 kg box is sitting on a scale in an elevator because the box and scale need to get to the lab on the second floor of the Science Building. Looking at the scale you realize that it is reading 500 Newtons as the elevator is speeding up.

  1. How many forces are acting on the box as it speeds up?
  2. Use a stacked addition table to determine the acceleration of the box.
  3. Draw a force diagram for the box while on the scale.
  4. If this acceleration lasts for 1.5 seconds from rest, what is the final momentum of the box?

You (mass = 75 kg) are riding in an elevator while standing on a scale. As the elevator begins to rise, you notice that the scale reading briefly increases to 785 N. What is the acceleration of the elevator during this time? Assuming it has three times the acceleration as it slows to rest at the top floor, what does the scale read as it slows?

For a physics class experiment, you place a Red Delicious apple of mass m=0.100 kg at rest on a bathroom scale, and place the combination on the floor of an elevator in a tall building as shown in the Figure. The elevator is initially at rest. Suppose the elevator has been summoned by someone on a higher floor. While the elevator is speeding up and traveling upward (in the +y direction), it has an acceleration of ay=1.00 m/s2 . What...

Suppose Arturo is standing on a spring bathroom scale in an elevator, which is at rest, on the 15th floor. What is his acceleration? What forces are acting on him? What is the reading (in Newtons) on the bathroom scale if he has a mass of 150 kg? A 75-kg person stands on a weight scale in an elevator and pushes the button to go up. The elevator accelerates upward at 3 m/s2, then rises at a steady speed of 15 m/s, and finally decelerates at the top floor at a rate of 2 m/s2. Match the force values to their descriptions.
