On May 27, 2016, the FDA published final rules on the new Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to reflect new scientific information. These changes are introduced to address diseases secondary to faulty nutrition  intake . By following ways these guidelines will address increased obesity among us citizens:

  • These guidelines help increase public awareness of nutritional needs and facilitate nutrition education at multiple levels and in different settings
  • consumers have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about the foods they eat. These changes include increasing the type size for “Calories,” “servings per container,” and the “Serving size” declaration, and bolding the number of calories and the “Serving size”
  • quick signals for consumers are provided to know the benefits a food or beverage they choose might have
  • food industry is also encouraged to reformulate products to improve their healthy qualities.The goal is to maintain the basic nature and nutritional integrity of products while allowing industry flexibility for innovation to produce more healthful foods
  • Calories from Fat” is being removed by the type fat because research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount.
