Answer #1

There is a mechanism of difference between Asthma and opioid overdose
Asthma is a primary cause of respiratory acidosis in respiratory condition
but in opioid overdose it is secondary cause of respiratory acidosis..
In Asthma,COPD, Pneumonia lungs can not remove enough co2 due to obstruction, so there will be respiratory acidosis occurs when there will be airway obstruction..When the lungs can not remove CO2 produced by the body there will be increased co2 make blood pH decrease and become acidic..normally the body controls acidity..acidosis occurs when the pH below 7.35 level..This can cause decrease respiratory rate..
Opioids are respiratory depressants.. In opioid overdose there will be alteration in lungs and brain..it make hypercapnic respiratory failure amd altered mental status..there will be airway obstruction due to opioid overdose when it affect the lungs..Hypoventilation occurs when ventilation is inadequate for gas exchange..It increased the co2 level and cause respiratory acidosis..

ABG problem. Patient has respirations of 22 breaths/min, is in respiratory alkalosis and is hypoxic. What interventions do you use to fix this problem? The answer is decrease tidal volume and decrease respirations. For some reason I can't wrap my mind around this. If the patient is hypoxic why would we want to lower tidal volume? and increasing respirations helps us to blow off CO2 and gain more O2, so why would we decrease it? this is what I know...
