A 75-year old patient had a PEG placed 2 days ago. She is now receiving an enteral feeding. Jevity 1.0 full strength at a rate of 100/mL/hr. Four hours after the first feeding, the patient started having diarrhea. The nurse should FIRST?

  1. Discontinue the enteral feeding.
  2. Decrease the feeding rate.
  3. Request a nutritional consult.
  4. Dilute the formula and administer half-strength formula.

Answer: Discontinue the enteral feeding.

( In the case of gastrointestinal tract problem or chances of diarrhea, the enteral feeding should be stopped instantly. Because long term diarrhea may cause dehydration.)
