In the population, the average IQ is 100. A team of scientists wants to test a new medication to see if it has either a positive or negative effect on intelligence or no effect at all.

Answer #1

H0: \mu = 100

Ha: \mu \neq 100

Test statistics

t = (\bar{x} - \mu ) / (S / sqrt(n) )

= P(Z < (140 - 100) / (20 / sqrt(30) )

= 10.95

Critical values at 0.05 level with 29 df = -2.045 , 2.045

Since test statistics falls in rejection region , Reject H0.

We conclude at 0.05 level that we have sufficient evidence to support the claim that the medication

affect intelligence.

    1. You are a teacher at a school for gifted children, and you feel that your newest class of students are even brighter than usual. The mean IQ at your school is 127, and the mean IQ of this new class is 134. In total, there are 32 students in this new class. Also, the standard deviation of the school's IQ is 8. Use the eight steps to test whether this new class of students is significantly more intelligent than...

    The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale is an intelligence test, which, like many other IQ tests, is standardized in order to have a normal distribution with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 points. As an early intervention effort, a school psychologist wants to estimate the average score on the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale for all students with a specific type of learning disorder using a simple random sample of 36 students with the disorder. Determine the margin of error,...

    We know that the IQ test has a population mean of 100 and a population standard deviation of 16 (we know this because IQ tests are normed on thousands of people and these are the consistent values). The principals of a consortium of 3 high schools for the gifted want to know if their students are above average. They give the IQ test to all their students and here are the results: School A = 104 School B = 116...
