Answer #1

GIVEN:

STOCK SOLUTION: 1000 units/ml

strength of heparin injection/infusion is 75 units/ml

Volume to be dispensed is 40 ml

Total amount of heparin require as per the prescription is 75 units/ml * 40 ml = 3000 units.

As stock solution is having 1000 units/ml and we require 3000 units in 40 ml.

steps to be followed:

step 1: withdraw 3 ml of heparin from the stock solution (1000 units/ml)

step 2: Add sufficient quantity of normal saline (0.9%) (nearly about 37 ml) to make the volume up to 40 ml (i.e. 37 ml normal saline + 3 ml of heparin stock solution) and shake it for homogenization.

Note: during preparation of heparin injection all extra precaution and care should be taken as per the standard guidelines i.e. overages, sterility, air bubbles and others must be done as per the SOP/ protocols.
