The purpose of Critical Incident Stress Management is to manage stress in emergency situations. Here, in this case, responding to a multiple victim bus accident with no fatalities is one perfect example of CISM. Critical Incident Stress Management will never be given to a primary victim. It is used for secondary victim such as emergency service personal.
CISM is usually given by the nursing manager of the emergency department. It will help people from going to post-traumatic stress disorder because of the emotional relationship with the primary victim. The types of interventions required are defusing, debriefing and follow-up. Defusing done on the day of the incident to ensure the persons involved are feeling normal. Debriefing is done within 72 hours of incident and involves the discussion about the incident with secondary victim and the final step is follow-up which is done after debriefing and refers the person to a professional counselling if required.
