At the end of the storyline, brother Gu attempts to convince the girl not to run away and join the communist party but sadly understand the singing girl's despair as she was to be married to a man who is way older than her as her wedding dowry was used to pay her mother's funeral and brother's engagement. At the end after her marriage she crosse the yellow river but it was unclear that she made it or not to the other side.

This movie happens in 1939 in a mountain village in china centers on the relationship between Gu Qing, a member of the Eighth Route Army, and a peasant family.
