Gus’s symptoms resolve in 24 hours without further incident or adverse event. A meeting was conducted with the nursing student and instructor to debrief the incident. The student provided the following explanation for the error. In an attempt to save time, the student removed and prepared the medications for both of her patients from the Pyxis (automated drug dispensing system) at the same time. She reviewed and checked the medications for both patients in the medication room and then left both cups on the counter. When the student returned to the medication room to retrieve the first patient’s medication she grabbed the wrong cup. The student acknowledged that she did not check the patient’s medication at the bedside because she had already checked them in the medication room.

1.A nurse has a personal and legal obligation to provide a standard of client care expected of a reasonably competent professional nurse. In this case the patient has been negligent. According to ANA code of ethics it is the duty of the nurse to promote, advocate, and strives to protect the health safety and rights of the client. Omitting a right of drug Administration such as giving an incorrect dose, not giving an ordered dose and giving the wrong drug are all considered medication errors. violation of this right could result in ethical dilemmas.

The steps of medication administration are

Right patient

Right dose

Right time

Right medication

Right route are the five rights of medication. In this case the student nurse didn't made sure that the medicine she was going to administer belong to Gus. Another thing she didn't checked whether the medicine belong to the concerned person.

If she was an RN, the ethical committee would take a multidisciplinary approach to facilitate dialogue regarding ethical dilemma which has happened.Boards of nursing might take discipliniary action such as denying, revoking or suspending any license to practice as a Registered nurse according to the statutory authority.

The student should make sure that she follows institutional medication policies by providing safe, accurate medication administration. Delegating in compliance with the law and hospital.

The steps in medication administration process are

Right patient, Right medication, Right dose, Right Route, Right time and right documentation.
