Anatomy of the heart
Human heart is located in the mediastinum of the thoracic cavity has four chambers, namely, two atria and two ventricles. They are differentiated as left and right atria and as left and right ventricles. Atria are the chambers which receive blood into the heart, while ventricles pump blood out of the heart. Right portion of the heart deals with deoxygenated blood and left portion with oxygenated.
All the four chambers of the heart have different function. Right atria receive deoxygenated blood from the body through superior and inferior vena cava and pump it to the right ventricle via tricuspid valve. Right ventricle pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs for oxygenation through pulmonary artery. Pulmonary valve guards the entry of blood from right ventricle into the pulmonary artery.
Left atria receive oxygenated blood from the lungs through pulmonary veins. It sends blood to the left ventricle via bicuspid valve / mitral valve. Left ventricle pump the oxygenated blood to the blood parts and tissues through aorta guarded by aortic valve.
Veins (vena cava) always carry blood to the heart and arteries always carry blood away from the heart. Valves allow the flow of blood into one direction only, that is atria to ventricles , and ventricles to pulmonary artery and aorta.
Term cardiovascular system is used combined for heart, veins, arteries and capillaries. Cardiology is the study of disorders related to heart, its components and its functioning.
