- Health status can affect the ability to perform ADLs and to participate in social roles.

- A failure to perform these activities may increase dependence on others and may have a negative effect on morale and life satisfaction.

- When older adults lose the ability to function independently, they often feel empty and worthless.

- Nurses need to support older adults' self-esteem and feelings of independence by encouraging them to maintain as much control as possible over their lives, to participate in decision making, and to perform as many tasks as possible.
