Question

In acceptance sampling, a purchaser samples items from a batch of items and rejects the batch if more than a certain number of the items in the sample are defective. For example, suppose you are a chef inspecting a delivery of 100 avocados from your produce vendor. You randomly select 4 of the avocados to inspect for quality and freshness, and will send the delivery back to the vendor if at least 1 of the 4 avocados you inspect is defective. Find the probability that you send the avocado delivery back.

Answer #1

If probability of defective in the lot is p then probability of sending back the lot is 1-(1-p)^4. This is equivalent to at least one defective.

Acceptance sampling is an important quality control technique, where a batch of data is tested to determine if the proportion of units having a particular attribute exceeds a given percentage. Suppose that 9% of produced items are known to be nonconforming. Every week a batch of items is evaluated and the production machines are adjusted if the proportion of nonconforming items exceeds 12%. [You may find it useful to reference the z table.) a. What is the probability that the...

    a) An industrial product is shipped in lots of 15 items. Testing to determine whether an item is defective is costly, and hence the manufacturer samples his production rather than inspecting each item. A sampling plan is devised and calls for sampling five items from each lot. If the lot contains four defectives, what is the probability that exactly two defectives are found in this sample? b) You run into your long lost relative at the airport, but you have...
