Sociological explanation for differences in health chances and health and social care.

Socialolgical researches show that there is inequality in health chances and health and social care among different groups in society. The social groups include age, gender, class , ethnicity etc. There are evidence of poor health among some social groups as a result of disparities in health and social care provisions. This inequality might be due to system of health and social care, health care provider's attitude, location of social and healthcare facility, cost of healthcare etc.

Gender :

There are no socities in which women are treated as equals with men so inevitably it affects women's health and social welfare. In enjoying the position in the society or family and a good healthy state for women largely depends on her biological state. An important consideration of healthcare delivery system of any government is the difference between male and female reproductive system. The statistics show that half a million women die each year due to any consequence of the pregnancy and childbirth.

There are different areas where women suffers difference in getting social and health care services. For example in US women had to pay higher insurance premium than men due to the regulations of private insurance companies. Contraceptive mandate also presented gender inequality in the American healthcare system. Viagra used by men considered under standard part of healthcare but insurance coverage of contraception was framed as a government subsidy for sexual activity till recent years. Patient protection and Affordable Care Act changed the scenario to some extent.

Gender inequality in education, income and wealth make women, especially in developing and under developed countries, more vulnerable to povery, ill health and deprivation of health and social care.

Ethnicity:

Inequality is a state of unfair or not equal state. Now a days racial inequality is less identifiable. Yet there are difference in employment, housing , education and rarely in healthcare field also. Sociological studies show that even though there is no overt discrimination in the job field, African Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed as Whites and the wages also less in Hispanics and African Americans. This inturn leads to the disparities in healthcare provision as the services are costly in various healthcare settings.

Decades back the health status of black was poorer in the US than White. Thanks to Sociological studies and researches, they made contributions to bring the datas into light. The scenario changed now to a good extent. Still some of the evidences shows that there are disparities based on gender and ethnicity. One of the sociological study results shows that White men and women are outlived their black counterparts by 6 and 4 years. Another Study shows that major depression in blacks more common than Whites and were more likely to be persistent, severe, and untreated.
