Answer #1

When I think of a conflict that I had during the past month, the first thing that comes to my mind is the sudden death of my grandmother’s friend and the issues that I had related to that. Last month, during the semester break, I went to spend a few days with my paternal grandmother and to get a loan for my studies from her. I never took a student loan as I have heard about many of my seniors who couldn’t pay it back. She lives in a rural area in Florida, and she was quite happy living there with my aunt and her children. It was a friendly neighborhood with loving, caring, and sharing people, which can be considered as an ideal one. The only problem was the lack of modern amenities, which sort of made the community a crippled one. The schools they had were good and even better than those in the urban areas with dedicated teachers. My grandmother is a former teacher at one of those schools. Her close friend and former colleague, Ms. Baker, has been bedridden for the past 6 years. Mrs. Baker was taken care of by a home nurse, who does not have any nursing qualification but had successfully completed a 3 months’ home nurse training. The IV medications, injections, etc. were administered by RN, Laura Cornell, of the local clinic, who lives nearby.

One day my granny took me with her to visit Mrs. Baker. When we reached there, Mrs. Baker was having some difficulty breathing. We called the RN from the local clinic. She said she had to attend an emergency ICU case and so she can’t come, instead, she will send one of her colleagues, Ms. Derek, an APRN, and she is the only one available for just half an hour. Ms. Derek arrived after 10 minutes and said she would like to check vitals, oxygen level, etc before giving IV. Suddenly Ms. Baker and her husband got angry when Ms. Derek went to check the vitals. They said they don't want an African-American to check her vitals and treat her. We were all shocked at their response. Ms. Baker's condition was getting worse but she is not allowing the APRN to check. Then my granny asked me if I can check her vitals and give her IV and oxygen. I said I can check her vitals if she allows me to, but I can't give her IV as I am not qualified to give those. Medical ethics don’t allow me to give any medication, what should I do?

I, my granny, and the APRN went to the next room and had a conversation about how to handle this situation. We came back and told Mr. Baker that I will do that and he should wait in the other room for some time. By this time Ms. Baker had fallen into sleep. Then I had the APRN check the vitals and give the IV medication and oxygen.

Alternatives for this solution would be to do wait for one hour till the RN arrives or call to some other clinic for help.
