Answer #1

Tetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is used to treat infection with both gram positive and gram negative bacterial infections.

The tetracycline has drug interaction with calcium carbonate, when administered concomitantly. The absorption of the tetracycline is reduced and it affects the antibiotic efficacy. Thus both of these drug should not be used together for effective treatment of infection.

Thus the nurse should inform the doctor about the drug interaction and confirm the order.

If the use of both medication can not be avoided, the calcium carbonate should be administered at least 2 hours after administration of tetracycline and antibiotic efficacy monitoring should be done continuously.
