The advanced directives can be defined as the set of legal instructions a person documents for future use regarding his desire for treatment when he or she is incompetent to do so.
Advanced directives can be expressed in two forms :
1. Living will
2. Power of attorney or proxy for medical health
Living will is a legal document which gives instructions to healthcare providers and caregivers about the treatment a person would want to receive when he is unable to give consent himself. Such a document express person’s desire about the type of treatment he would like to receive when he cannot make the decision. Living will is used when the person is suffering from terminal illness or permanently unconscious.
It may state directions for use of pain killers, feeding tubes, resuscitation.
Sometimes a person may choose another person usually a close relative or friend to make medical decisions for him when he is incompetent to do so. The proxy will take the decisions about the treatment to be given based on patient’s will.
The advanced directives have different legal status in different countries.
